Twitter War Of Titans - Twitter Unites Against Barkha Dutt

This is about a virtual war of Titans on Twitter. On one side, it was Barkha Dutt on Twitter and on the other, well, read on. You know Twitter and perhaps you already have an account with the social networking site. So other than time-pass and marketing, what other purposes does Twitter serve? There are many benefits of Twitter. However, rarely though, it becomes a war zone. 22nd Jan 2012 was one of those days when many joined the Twitter war of Titans.

Barka Dutt: Role In Mumbai Seige - As Noted By A Blogger

The story is about a blogger who wrote a blog about the first titan, Ms Barkha Dutt, implicating her into supposed irresponsible journalism during Mumbai Seige in Nov 11 (2008). Well, that should be "reporting" instead because there is a fine line between "reporting" and "journalism". Journalism has to be more mature and our Barkha Dutt is considered very mature and probably one of the most powerful journalists in India.

Barkha Dutt Of NDTV

The blog is no more. Blogger took it down because Barkha Dutt and the firm she works in (NDTV, many in India call it a congress mouthpiece (not me, of course - I love those guys - I even had a crush on Barkha that pops up from time to time)), found it defamatory. Indeed it would hurt if you say "People died because of YOU". She retaliated and as a result the blog was taken down. This happened to anger few people on Twitter.

Probably, the blogger did not read Bhagvad Gita. It says - "life and death are pre-destined. If it is time for anyone to leave this material world, s/he has to leave it and none can change it - with an exception of Savitri, who fought with death to bring her husband back from death". Going by this, it was not even the terrorists who killed people. They just died.

I don't know whose face our honored journalist saw while waking up but I know whoever it was, s/he brought a bit of chaos in her life on a Sunday that would otherwise have been pleasant.

Even before our sweet and talented journalist, Barkha Dutt of NDTV, signed in to Twitter, people were talking about the blog being brought down by Blogger. Actually, you can see, Blogger (Google) was the culprit but they were blaming our poor Bharatiya Naari (Conceptualized Indian Woman) for the same.

While we are it, here is a question: doesn't Taslima Naasreen live in India? I just got this doubt because living in India on government's expense and criticizing, destroying the same government do not go hand in hand anywhere except in India. Or do they? Even that guy from Kashmir, what was his name?

Anyway, those two have nothing to do with Barkha Dutt or NDTV. They just use our Barkha Dutt to get into news. Let us continue with the story about Twitter war of Titans.

So How It All Started?

Someone called Harsh asked a question to Barkha Dutt.. wait, it was like - This Harsh tweeted saying if a blogger indicts PM/CM in similar way as the above blogger did, would she felt the same? He then went ahead to tag her in the tweet. See this below (Click to expand):

What Was Wrong in Saying Yes?

That could have been the end of it but no - someone called BarbarIndian commented (again by tagging her) saying "not murder, but manslaughter". Nowhere in the tweet did he directly say her case was about manslaughter and not just murder. But then, our Barkha was hurt. Obviously it would hurt when you call anyone a mass murderer. People call Indira Gandhi and Narendra Modi, mass murderers too. But then, they do not fight on Twitter. Oh wait, Indira Gandhi cannot come to Twitter.

Twitter War Of Titans: What Next?

You might have noted in the above image, our Burkha Dutt responded by saying she can use BarbarIndian's tweet against him. Again, there was nothing wrong with it. Most of us swear all the time - calling names, issuing threats we do not mean. Most trendy are - I will kill you, Fuck you, Die and more. For the full list, follow some good Indian gentlemen on Twitter - (For example JoyDas, ChamatkariBaba and Rudraa: they will inform you of swears you thought never existed - Someday I will compile them for you).

Anyway, that was just a normal threat like friends swear at each other but seems the Twitter people could not understand it. I do not have words to explain what happened after.... It was Barkha vs Twitter: A War Of Titans kind of thing. Check out the images below (click to enlarge).

An entire army of tweeps supporting Barbarindian: what else would you call it other than a Twitter war? And the root cause for the hatred is not yet ascertained. I know people hate Barkha Dutt. But people, can't we settle the issue in courts? What is the point being shouting on Twitter, eating, drinking and then forgetting the issue until some other blogger/writer comes up with a similar story? Isn't this why India is ruled by people who can't even bend down to tie their shoelaces as their tummy won't allow?

What is the concept of governments? Who was the first government? How did the system ofgovernment come into effect? If we assume that itwas the traditional king system converted to government then who was the firstking and how was he made a king? Here is a bit of analysis to help you understandthe concept of governments and how they came into being.

Early DaysOn Earth

Old Stone Age People

To understand the concept of governments, we must look back to the Stone Age. Most of us know about the cavemen. They hunted and providedfor food. Cavemen lived in groups, often a family. Later, they discovered wheeland fire, which served as a boon to our existence. The tendency to live ingroups must have come over by the fact that their ancestors were apes. Andapes, just like most of the animals, live in groups. They care for each otherin the group and work to provide food and security to their small ones.

You might ask how are cavemen related to the concept ofgovernment! Cavemen did not have kings and society or an established culture. Youare true. Cavemen did not have a society. Per historians, the firstcivilization was found in Mohanjo-daro. However, the remains of Mohanjo-daroshow that they already had kings. We have to look a little more into the pastto understand how kings came up and later transformed into governments as wesee them today.

The Rule ofDacoits

Cavemen were kind of nomads. They stayed at a place onlytill resources lasted and upon exhaustion of the resources, they moved out insearch of food and water. As they became more and more civilized by gatheringand processing information about things around them, they started colonizing –often near rivers. The discovery of agriculture further strengthened thesecolonies as people started sowing and reaping their own stuff.

Early Kings (The First Kings On Planet)

Others in the colony came up with selling goods. It mighthave been the barter system as there is no mention about any form of currency atthat stage of history. This must have been what the historians call the"New Stone Age". Yes, the concept of government dates back to thatperiod.

While most people were busy growing and selling for aliving, there were few people who felt why should they work! These type ofpeople were not interested in growing or hunting their own food or in barteringfor clothes etc. Being powerful, they started looting others in the colonies.When the people did not have enough to provide these dacoits, they moved toother colonies. Different colonies were forced to give away food and otheritems to these dacoits who might have used weapons to threaten people.

Rise ofKings

We are talking about dacoits looting people in the earliestcivilizations. As with animals, they must have marked their areas. Just as animalsmark their area – which is not visible to human eyes – they too createdboundaries for looting people. What I mean to say is that these boundariesprohibited these looters from crossing into the area of other dacoits.

Sooner or later, they realized that looting people of alltheir goods is not good as the victims would travel into other areas. Onetheory says these dacoits started offering security to the people who lived intheir boundaries – from other dacoits. This turned into a respectfulprofession. Offer security and help them solve their differences while receivinggrains and other items as tax. This was the rise of kings, the earlygovernments (monarchy and aristocracy).

Modern Governments

Coming to modern day governments, there are still fewcountries that are ruled by kings. Some nations call them kings and othernations call them presidents. These kings prepare someone (mostly, from theirown family) to handle the governance and when time comes, they pass on the reinsof government to the person they trained.

But when the atrocity of such rulers extended beyond"point-of-patience", several groups of people would become rebels andfight them. In current world too, you will find that almost every country withdictatorship, single-man-rule (monarchy) has one or more rebel groups fightingthe ruler (government).

The first instance of Republic (elected by people of theland) was indicated in Rome by historians. The aristocrats must have thought ofexpanding to provide better governments and for the purpose, they would havenominated different people allowing the citizens to elect their favoriterepresentatives into government. This could be the first form of democracy –government by the people, for the people. Today, most countries are republic –meaning they can elect representatives into the government. There are instancesof monarchy too. Even in case of kings, people are allowed to select representatives.

Internet Censorship In India - Facts You Should Know

If you think the Internet is a free medium of expression in India, you are wrong. Internet censorship has existed in India for as long as one full decade (as on 8th Dec 2011). In India, the era of Internet Censorship begun in the year 2000 (July 2000 to be specific). Read on to find out the details of web censorship in this country.

The Basis For Internet Censorship In India

Facebook Censored

The bill for Internet Censorship was created by the Indian Parliament in the summer session of year 2000. Known as the Information Technology Act, it aimed to provide a legal framework to regulate Internet use and commerce, including digital signatures, security, and hacking. The act criminalizes publishing of obscene information electronically and grants police powers to search any premises without a warrant and arrest individuals in violation of the act.

In 2003, an organization named Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) came into being, under the IT Act 2000. A list was created as to who could raise concerns about online content. This list contains certain individuals in the government sector thereby limiting the power to raise objections on Internet content available in India. The work of CERT was to issue examine such objections and issue BLOCK notices.

Another basis for filtering was demonstrated with the blocking of the site hinduunity.org on April 28, 2004, reportedly ordered by the Mumbai police on the grounds that it contained anti-Islamic inflammatory material. Police commissioners, who can exercise the powers of executive magistrates in times of emergency, can block Web sites containing material constituting a nuisance or threat to public safety under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Filtering can also be mandated through licensing requirements. ISPs seeking licenses to provide Internet services with the DOT “shall block Internet sites and/or individual subscribers, as identified and directed by the Telecom Authority from time to time” in the interests of “national security”.

Using Orkut Can Be Dangerous!

In 2006, filtering requests were also generated by individuals protesting content they considered offensive or obscene. On October 10, 2006, the Bombay High Court directed Maharashtra government to issue notice to Google for “alleged spread of hatred about India” on its social networking site Orkut, in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition calling for the ban of Orkut for hosting a “We Hate India” community.

A month later, in response to protests over an “anti-Shivaji” community on Orkut, Pune police banned Orkut and temporarily shut down cybercafés where users were found to be using the site. These kind of filtering and bans were made possible via local blocking of the sites by the Internet Service Providers (ISP).

Both above paragraphs show how vulnerable the ISPs are when it comes to Internet censorship in India. Since they have to run their business using the government license, they have to oblige to censorship demands of government machinery.

People On Web Censorship in India

Though not a very reliable source, Wikia has some instances of Internet Censorship carried forward by the Indian Government using the above technique of asking ISPs to block IP addresses. Check out the Internet Censorship section of the wiki. According to it, some 17 blogs on TypePad, WordPress and GeoCities were banned by the Indian government. As the ISPs could not block the subdomains, they blocked the entire websites.

Bloggers Against Censorship was the outcome of that move. The organization came up and started revolting against the web censorship. “There are many questions raised by these apparent acts of Internet Censorship. This effort is aimed at nothing less than ensuring the Government will never again do something like this. There should be no site or group of sites that they will ever again be able to block; in fact, there should be no book they will ban, no infringement on freedoms at all ever again. It is against our constitutional Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression as an Indian Citizen,” quotes Bloggers Against Censorship.

Rajesh Chharia (president of India’s Internet Service Providers Association) commented: “India is more sensitive than other countries. Some amount of check and balance is required. But to pre-screen all material is an uphill task and may not be practically applicable.”

Gulshan Rai, head of the Indian Cyber Emergency Response Teams (CERT-In) claims it is possible to pre-screen the contents. “The companies can design filters to check that any objectionable content cannot make its way to the websites.'”

CJ News India calls the Information Technology Act “illegal” and “unconstitutional”, while quoting a case where Yahoo dragged Indian govt to court as the latter was asking details of over a dozen people under the clause of national security.

Despite all this, the Indian government declines Internet censorship saying they are not blocking the freedom of speech but trying to control certain elements that may cause discomfort and unrest among people.

Update 12/23/2011

In response to a PIL submitted by an unknown entity, the Delhi High Court sent notifications to some 21 websites asking them to remove objectionable content which other than obscene content, includes morphed photographs of prominent politicians. These websites include Google, Facebook and Microsoft.

Will FDI in Retail in India really create thousands of jobs while making easy, the life of (poor) farmers? The government of India offered a policy permitting foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail sector of India (Nov 2011). It says this move will boost the economy and create more jobs. There is a section of people excited about this. And there is a section of people going against it. Most affected are our politicos - who have brought parliament to a stop. The following checks out the views and opinions of different entities on FDI in Retail in India (As on Nov 2011.) Before clicking "Read More", grab a cup of coffee. India: Contributing to Global Development Through FDI?

When government opened up doors for foreign direct investment (FDI) in $28 billion retail sector in India (Nov 2011), there were… well, I cannot say it was a mixed reaction. There have been only two kinds of reaction: happy people and protesters.

The only ones seem to be most effected (with the kind of noise they are making), are the politicians. Some politicos in the government (within the UPA) are also opposing the move.

Consumers are happy as most of them always preferred foreign brands to 'Made in India' brands. Someone said, "Be Indian, Buy Indian" but it has lost its context these days. The reason cited is - quality of home productions is always poor. I have seen people going to US to buy sarees exported to the US from India and then, gift them as "Made In US" Sarees!

If end consumers are happy, politicos should also be supporting the move but they are not. As far as I know, politicians in India don’t do anything without incentives. Then, what could be the reason behind these protests?

Congress (Not Govt) Has Cited Two Major Benefits

1. Low Cost Products

With more foreign companies investing in retail, consumers will get more choices and will have to spend less. That is indeed, a good news - especially when the inflation is bent upon climbing up and up.

2. Employment Will Increase

Govt says lot many jobs will be created for people. In India, where unemployment is a major problem, foreign companies that come to India, will offer jobs to Indians. This is also good as the govt failed to provide proper support to Indians aspiring to provide jobs to other Indians. It has programs like Jawahar Rozgar Yojna etc in place but right now, Anna Hazare and Co. is fighting to get them working without the applicants having to pay heavy kickbacks.

Amitabh Bachchan, in the following video, said India now does not buy foreign goods but instead buys the companies that sell those goods.

Per the account, "With a contribution of 14% to the national GDP and employing 7% of the total workforce (only agriculture employs more) in the country, the retail industry is definitely one of the pillars of the Indian economy".

The above report focuses on figures and compares Indian "organized" and "unorganized" retail sectors with other countries. Here is another line that grabbed my attention, "The presence of more than one retailer for every hundred persons is indicative of the lack of economic opportunities that is forcing people into this form of self-employment, even though much of it is marginal".

Meanwhile, the US India Business Council too has issued a statement on this new govt policy. It says this move will improve Indo-US ties. The Nuclear agreement too improved the ties. While they keep on improving the ties, they won't provide support to Indian govt in fighting terrorism. However, retail is not terrorism. Both the markets are different with some similarity. Check out the details on how the move will improve Indo-US ties.

Coming to politicos, DMK (Tamil Nadu) has decided to go with Congress on the FDI in Retail Policy. This backup has boosted the spirits of UPA and it now says let the opposing parties call for a non-confident motion. From its past experience, the UPA govt knows how to buy MPs in case a non-confidence motion comes up.

Indian Version of VoldMart

In another instance, while opposing FDI in Retail, TMC (West Bengal) has decided not to vote if a discussion comes up in the parliament. "To abstain from voting is equal to voting in favor".

I don't know who said that but it does look true to some extent. So it seems TMC wants to project that it is protecting the interests of traders (termed as middle-men in retail context) while keeping its relations in good standing with the Congress. This also sends an affirmative signal to the Congress.

While so many people are taking about FDI in retail, how could our unelected, self proclaimed representative of India - Mr Anna Hazare - stay behind? He too issued a statement against foreign investment saying it is anti-India. Not only that, he also said, "If people are saying it (FDI) should not happen, why are you insisting? The British came to India to trade and for 150 years, ruled us, enslaved us. Do you want to have a repeat?" It is no secret that many foreign agencies keep on funding his NGO. Many of his 'fast unto deaths' were carried out with the money foreign elements donated. But that is a different case. I would rather not dare to talk about that.

Questions For Further Analysis of FDI In Retail Sector (ef 2011) in India
1. Foreign investment is understandable but if the traders are resisting it, why is government bent upon implementing it?
2. Why 51 percent, why not 49?
3. What happened to national agriculture policy? Where does it stand after 11 years? Why?
4. How did the govt reach the estimate of 10million jobs? How long will it take to get those 10mn people employed?
5. Can the government not handle creation and maintenance of warehousing and mandis for betterment of farmers on its own?
6. Is there any insurance policy in place for farm produce and storage? If yes, how feasible it is from a farmer's point of view?

Update on FDI in Retail in India (2011) Bowing to the pressure from the opposition, the govt (or rather, the Indian National Congress) has shelved its plan of allowing FDI in retail till the Assembly Polls are over in UP next year (2012). If the world does not end on 20.12.2012, we will again see a drama over the proposed FDI in retail sector of India - in 2012!

What Is The Best Career Path To Take?

You can opt to be a job-seeker, research on how to choose a college that promises you placement and keeps you waiting for years.

On the other hand, you may opt to be a job provider. If you opt to be a job provider, you will face hurdles: mainly finance and balancing personal issues with business. Among other problems may be: How to fund my business? How to manage business? etc. I have some answers here.

How Long Can You Wait For A Job?

You need not have a business management degree. Most of the entrepreneurs don't. The ONLY thing required when you opt to become a job provider is a deep desire to succeed. Once you have this desire, no one can stop you (of course, people may try to divert you or your family may start asking for money from the first month itself). You have to think and know how to handle business as well as personal life - because if your personal problems start getting into business, matters become worse.

For help on how to choose a career, there are several government aids in almost each country. Each government knows that the key to remove unemployment is to create more job providers.

In my case, I do not wait for government to help us. We have a list of people who risk their money in stocks and gambling. You can easily convince such people to invest in your business - offering them a residual income. What more would an investor want?

Unemployment is not a problem at all. It just depends on the perspective of people and the society. If they look-down people opting for self-employment, it is their mental rigidity that needs to be changed. Such societies can never thrive nor let others thrive. But you now know how to choose a career that helps not only you but several others as well.

The article can go as long as my life story. However, I would end it on the note that when thinking in terms of how to choose a college or how to choose a career, think of successful people who made it big. Just think what would have been the case if Bill Gates too decided to pursue his studies and go seeking a job! No need to mention his endeavor now helps millions survive!

How To Choose A College For Your Career

A friend of mine asked how to choose college for a good job. This question acted as if someone triggered a remote bomb and my mind was full of major factors of unemployment across the world. I went through my own story. Analyzing little, I found few factors for unemployment. I will tell you what I think could be the best career for you and how should you select a college for that.

What College Did They Attend?

The only answer I found was that people think in terms of choosing a college that helps them get a good job. Everyone thinks in terms of how to choose a college: choose from existing opportunities and keep on responding to different ads for landing up with a job. I have seen people sitting back until they live out all their young years: thinking on how to choose career instead of how to create careers.

They are not to be blamed! The kind of atmosphere they are brought up - parents and relatives selecting careers for the kids and teens - affects their mindset. In short, the social rigidity stresses more on creating job-seekers instead of job-providers. Hence, people think in terms of choosing college for a good job and not in terms of creating a career.

There is a difference in choosing an available available career and building one. I prefer the latter. A person will never be unemployed if s/he wants to earn. People can also earn by supplying water. Many people in Hyderabad (India) are into this business. And they have full fledged staff involved! They do not own tankers. Their staff employs bicycles with plastic containers!

The best answer is – Select the college/institution that offers alternate education to help create own careers. I never went for a formal degree. I too thought about my career early and finally opted for computer courses as they would take me to where I want to reach: to a position where I can create jobs for others.

Mainstream educational degrees may or may not bring you fruits but if you have something technical at hand, you can always leave the category of "job seekers" to join "job providers". Hope this answers how to choose college.

When he contacted us, we found out the email addresses of the president of that telecom company. Some eight emails were sent requesting help. The VP obliged and this person had his phone number ported. That was the effect of people power.

Another one from among the Indians had a problem when a service center was charging too high for his car repair. He wanted help. We stepped in to contact the service providers and others involved. As a result, the service center did the repairs for the "real" costs.

We are not aiming euphoria.
Still together, we can make this society, a better place for us and our future generations.
